Dr. Virgil Andrei

My interests revolve around the development of renewable energy sources, such as photoelectrocatalysis, photovoltaics and thermoelectrics. I obtained my Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in chemistry from Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, where I studied thermoelectric polymer pastes and films in the group of Prof. Klaus Rademann. I then pursued a Ph.D. in chemistry at the University of Cambridge, where I developed perovskite-based artificial leaves in the group of Prof. Erwin Reisner, working closely with the optoelectronics group of Prof. Richard Friend at the Cavendish Laboratory. I was recently a visiting Winton Fellow in the group of Prof. Peidong Yang at the University of California, Berkeley, and I am currently a Title A Research Fellow at St. John’s College, Cambridge. My work places a strong focus on material design and practical applications, introducing modern fabrication techniques towards low-cost, large-scale solar fuel production.

Research Groups:
Prof. Erwin Reisner, Reisner Lab, Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry
Prof. Richard Friend, Optoelectronics Group, Cavendish Laboratory

Research Topic: Artificial leaves for scalable solar fuel synthesis
